Changes made to Covid-19 testing guidance for high-risk settings
The Government has updated its Covid-19 testing guidance, advising people in England to take rapid lateral flow tests before going to high-risk settings.
The list of high-risk settings includes crowded or enclosed spaces or visiting medically vulnerable people.
The change in testing guidance comes as a further 42,484 new Covid cases were reported across the UK on 23 November.
The case rate in Birmingham last week was 296.5 per 100,000 - slightly lower than the English average of 427.6 positive cases per 100,000.

Erin Henwood, policy advisor at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce said: “With growing concern about the challenging winter ahead, the Government 's updated guidance will help to ensure those in high-risk settings are better protected from Covid-19. This advice will be particularly prudent for those in the retail and hospitality sectors, who will be expecting increased foot traffic over the festive period.
“Businesses are rightfully concerned about the continuing high level of reported Covid-19 cases and what this could mean for them after an incredibly difficult two years. Whilst advising individuals to take rapid lateral flow tests before entering high-risk settings is necessary, we are concerned that this does not go far enough to protect businesses and their employees from the virus.
“It is essential that the Government communicates any proposed changes to their approach as swiftly and transparently as possible, particularly if the current situation worsens and Plan B needs to be implemented. ”
