Community event returns to celebrate local women during International Women’s Day
An event to celebrate International Women’s Day will return to Burton, bringing together community members, professionals and local organisations for a day of powerful discussion, inspiration and thought-provoking conversation.
Following the success of last year's International Women’s Day event, Burton-based SARAC (Sexual Abuse Rape Advice Centre) have joined forces with YMCA Burton and The Mayor of East Staffordshire, Kim Smith BEM, for this year's celebration.
This will be the third year the event has taken place in Burton on Trent.
This year, it will be held on Friday, 6 March 2026, from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm at the Pirelli Stadium and will feature contributions from a range of passionate and experienced speakers.
The day promises an engaging line-up of confirmed guest speakers, including Burton police inspector and deputy commander, Michelle Ugwueze, Burton Unity director, Shamreen Gulzar and Jacob Collier MP, who will speak at the event.
Attendees can also hear from Mayor Kim Smith BEM on her inspiring story and tireless work within the community.
As well as speakers, the event includes thought-provoking activities and a demonstration by Tracy Payne from Strike Back Self Defence.
SARAC chief executive (pictured), Caroline Fotheringham, said: “It is a space for solidarity and has been carefully created to ensure attendees feel supported, respected and heard.”
Lunch will be provided, offering further opportunity to network, share experiences and strengthen local partnerships.
The event also highlights and supports the vital work of charities and organisations across our community.
YMCA Burton senior development manager, Catherine Miles, added: “The response to last year’s event was incredible.
“People told us how much they valued having a safe space to talk. Bringing it back this year in partnership with SARAC and Mayor Kim Smith BEM shows the strength of our shared commitment.
“Real change starts with conversation and with communities coming together.”
Tickets are £20 and available online. The event is open only to people aged over 18 and early booking is encouraged due to high demand.
