Council approves Towns Fund phasing as part of its high street development plan
The East Staffordshire Borough Council have approved the use of Towns Fund money to finance the initial three phases of the Burton High Street Project, which outlines development on the site over the next two years.
The three distinct phases will focus upon the following areas:
- Phase 1: Site enabling works, including the demolition of Trent House and Carling House Data Centre
- Phase 2: Initial conversion of The Water Tower and commencement of works to the Washlands Visitor Centres and Plaza
- Phase 3: Bass House initial restoration and conversion of the rear of the building
The phased approach allows key elements of the development to be brought forward sooner to be enjoyed by residents and visitors.
The utilisation of the Towns Fund monies were approved by Council leaders yesterday.
Councillor Louise Walker, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said: “I’m absolutely delighted the initial phases of the High Street site plans have been approved.
“The site has a lot of memories and connections with people in the town, and it would be great to see the activity in the buildings and area.
“This is an important development for Burton upon Trent and I’m really looking forward to seeing the initial phase commence later this year”.
The announcement marks another significant milestone in the regeneration of Burton upon Trent, with the completion of the first part of the High Street development, the enhancement of The Washlands, due for completion in the summer of 2025.
A future significant step forward in the development will be the announcement of the proposed food and beverage unit occupier within Bass House.
The Council are in advanced discussions with a respected hospitality operator who would provide a high quality and relaxed all-day food and drinks offering.
