East Staffordshire Borough Council is joining organisations across the UK in taking part in Water Saving Week during 4 to 8 May, as part of a national campaign run by water efficiency charity Waterwise.

This year’s theme is ‘Protect Water for Wildlife.’

East Staffordshire is home to some of the region’s most valued water environments, including the River Trent, the Washlands, and Branston Water Park, yet Staffordshire's rivers and wetlands are under pressure.

According to the most recent available data, a significant proportion of the county's waterbodies are not meeting good ecological status, and species such as the water vole – once common along local riverbanks – are in serious decline.

Climate projections for the West Midlands point to drier summers and increased risk of water shortages in the decades ahead, making water conservation an increasingly urgent local priority.

Councillor Dennis Fletcher, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: "We’re proud to be taking part in Water Saving Week this year. East Staffordshire has a wonderful natural water environment that we all have a responsibility to protect. Small changes by everyone really do add up."

Throughout the week, the council will be sharing daily content, tips, and challenges for staff, residents, and businesses.

Residents are encouraged to try the Waterwise Water Impact Calculator, a free tool that shows how much water you use at home, what it costs, and where small changes can make a real difference.

The campaign forms part of the council’s Corporate Plan commitments on water conservation and community engagement. Resources and information are available online.
