Council shortlisted for national awards recognising support for residents
Residents across Lichfield District are benefiting from faster access to financial support and improved services after Lichfield District Council was shortlisted for two national awards.
The council has been named as a finalist in the IRRV Performance Awards 2026, with nominations recognising both its innovative approach to council tax support and the dedication of the team that helps residents access vital financial assistance.
The nominations reflect improvements that have made a real difference to local people. Residents who are entitled to council tax support can now receive help much more quickly, reducing uncertainty and ensuring support reaches households when they need it most.
The council's Excellence in Innovation nomination recognises a new system that automatically updates Council Tax Support awards using real-time information.
The approach has reduced processing times from weeks to as little as one day, helping residents receive the correct support faster while removing the need to repeatedly report changes in circumstances.
The Benefits Team of the Year nomination recognises the work of the council's Benefits Team, which supports thousands of residents every year.
As well as processing benefit claims, the team works closely with housing and support services to help people facing financial hardship, prevent homelessness and ensure residents can access the assistance available to them.
The team also regularly attends community events and cost-of-living support sessions, helping residents understand what support is available and providing advice to those who may be struggling financially.
Councillor Rob Strachan, Cabinet Member for Finance and Commissioning, said: "These nominations are fantastic recognition of the positive difference our teams make to residents every day.
"We know that financial uncertainty can be incredibly stressful, particularly for those already facing difficult circumstances. That's why we have worked hard to make support quicker, simpler and easier to access, ensuring residents receive the help they are entitled to when they need it most.
"Our Benefits Team does an incredible job supporting thousands of residents each year, often helping people through some of the most challenging periods of their lives. At the same time, our innovative approach to Council Tax Support has transformed the speed at which people can access financial assistance.
"Over the past year, Lichfield District Council has received national recognition for its innovation, service delivery and commitment to residents, including being named Council of the Year at the iESE Awards and being shortlisted at both the LGC Awards and the MJ Awards.
"To be recognised nationally in two categories is a real achievement and I would like to congratulate everyone involved."
The latest nominations continue a successful period of national recognition for the council and highlight its commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative services that make a positive difference to residents' lives.
The council will now present its submissions to the judging panel before the winners of the IRRV Performance Awards 2026 are announced later this year.
