Cultural diversity takes centre stage as Asian Business Chamber celebrates Vaisakhi
The Asian Business Chamber of Commerce celebrated Vaisakhi yesterday, bringing businesses together to explore how cultural diversity can foster stronger communities.
Vaisakhi celebrates the Sikh community’s harvest festival honouring the work of farmers and paying tribute to God for food and future prosperity.
The event took place at the National Conference Centre with over 50 delegates attending.
ABCC president Monica Ghai welcomed the delegates and spoke about the importance Vaisakhi brings to the Asian business community.
During the event, an expert panel discussed how cultural understanding and shared traditions can foster stronger, and cohesive communities.
The panel included Bally Ark, director of Ark & Co Ltd, Kira Sehmbi, wealth management partner at True Potential Wealth Management, and Chamkor Singh from Mr Singh's All Vegetarian Pizza
It was chaired by ABCC vice president Sunil Kumar Mahay.
Bally Ark, a charted accountant and tax advisor, spoke about the Sikh values of accountability, inclusivity, heartfelt service, growth and togetherness. He also stressed the importance of finding time for yourself.
Chamkor Singh explained how the pizzeria celebrates Vaisakhi by donating food to gurudwaras and the many community events that are taking place.
He also shared how the Sikh community has helped many communities including coordinating rescue missions during the Turkey earthquakes in 2023.
Kira Sehmbi, who has been running her own wealth management practise for 10 years, gave her top tips in planning finances for the tax year.
She said: “Vaisakhi aligns with the new tax year, which encourages people to reflect and start making positive progress.
“I work closely with clients to understand their finances, focusing a lot on budgeting and even encouraging charitable donations where possible.
“One of the most important pieces of advice I give—whether for pensions, investments or savings—is to look carefully at bank statements, tidy up outgoings and make small tweaks, such as reviewing direct debits, which can make a big difference.”
ABCC will celebrate Eid on 4 June at The National Conference Centre, exploring how meaningful collaboration between the commercial and non-profit sectors can create long-term impact and shared success.
