Cycle hire scheme arrives in Moseley
Moseley has become the latest area to be added to the growing West Midlands Cycle Hire network following the introduction of new docking locations around the suburb.
The region-wide bike share scheme has seen more than 100,000 users sign up and almost half-a-million rides taken since launching in spring 2021.
Andy Street, mayor of the West Midlands, said: “Cycle hire has proved tremendously popular right across our region since we launched it two years ago. Now with these new docking stations in Moseley, I cannot wait to see even more people give these bikes a go.
“Cycling is a fantastic way to stay active - boosting both our mental and physical health - at the same time as helping us to tackle the climate emergency.
“Local people will now be able to hire one of our bikes for a ride around Moseley - or indeed for trips further afield to and from Birmingham city centre. I look forward to seeing the service enjoyed in the months ahead. ”
Users can locate the virtual docking stations and hire the bikes and ebikes via the Beryl smartphone app. To end their ride, once within the virtual docking area they simply press down the yellow lever on the front tyre, as they would in a physical docking station. The new additions mean there are now 195 physical and ten virtual docking stations across the region - the majority located in town and city centres.
The total fleet of bikes is 1,500 with a split of 1,350 green and grey branded pedal bikes and 150 green and purple electric bikes.
Adam Tranter, West Midlands Cycling and Walking Commissioner, said: “Cycle hire is just one element of our region-wide work to make active travel - cycling and walking - more attractive, convenient and safe for people. Especially for those shorter journeys.
“That is why, working with partners, we are putting unprecedented levels of investment into developing safe cycle routes and infrastructure.
“And of course, West Midlands Cycle Hire opens up cycling for even more people by removing the barriers of owning a bike - so I'm pleased this gives new options for people living, working and visiting Moseley. ”
The scheme is operated by Serco under contract from TfWM. The bikes are made by Pashley 's in Stratford-upon Avon and the docking stations and locks are also manufactured in the West Midlands.
