Future Faces member features in new George Floyd film
A Future Faces member who has dedicated her life to anti-racism, anti-oppression and equality for all people, nationally and internationally, is featured in a newly released film about the death of George Floyd.
Directed by Kwabena Oppong and produced by Satema Tarawally, the film is a gripping account of one of the defining events in recent modern history.
The film tells the story through the eyes of some of those who found themselves on the front line as they reflect on the events of spring and summer 2020, and the impact these still have on their lives today.
With unseen archive footage and compelling interviews, the feature documentary tells the story of how the police killing in Minneapolis went viral, causing the biggest civil unrest in the US in living memory, and then went global, landing with enormous impact in the UK.
Catching the government, police and media establishment off-guard, the sudden explosion of Black Lives Matter protests, driven by young people pouring onto the streets, not only shone the spotlight on police brutality but also exposed deep divides in the UK over matters of race.
Suddenly, celebrities, brands and institutions were all expressing their views on Black Lives Matter. But as the protesters started to topple statues and challenge British history, a backlash was brewing that brought a counter-protest onto the streets.
Natasha Johnson (pictured) is the co-founder of Anti-Racist and protest organisation, 'AllBlackLivesUK' which was founded in 2020 after the death of George Floyd.
Currently, she works with Human Rights organisation brap and is dedicated to working towards a brighter future in the Birmingham area. For the last 5 years, Natasha has been dedicating her life to anti-racism, anti-oppression and equality for all people, nationally and internationally.
She continues to speak at local and national events, including most recently debating at the Cambridge Union in February of this year. Natasha is hoping to make her impact nationwide and facilitate conversations on how we can all move forward to a more accepting and inclusive society.
Speaking about featuring in the film, Natasha said: "I am extremely proud to be featured in such a ground-breaking documentary, which focuses on how far we haven't come since the murder of George Floyd which brought the world to a standstill.
“The pushback from that time and the blatant racism we are now seeing in daily life and online is very disheartening. However, I truly believe that this film will help to change the narrative of how we speak about race in this country and saying the quiet part out loud in regard to Britian's relationship with racism."
