GBCC’s deputy CEO to leave for Black Country Chamber role

Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce’s deputy CEO Raj Kandola is to leave the organisation after almost a decade to take up the role of chief executive at the Black Country Chamber of Commerce.

Raj (pictured) joined the GBCC in 2016 as a senior policy advisor, rising to head of policy five years later and then director of external affairs in March 2023.

He was appointed permanent deputy CEO earlier this year, having spent a year co-leading the Chamber alongside chief financial officer Helen Bates during chief executive Henrietta Brealey's maternity leave.

In his time with the GBCC, Raj is credited with playing a central role in shaping the organisation's direction and its relationships with patrons and key stakeholders.

He has also led the Chamber’s external affairs, business growth services and international teams.

Raj will move into his first chief executive role when he takes the helm at Black Country Chamber, succeeding Sarah Moorhouse who is stepping down to pursue a new opportunity in the United States.

He said: “It was going to take an amazing opportunity for me to leave Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce after ten fantastic years, and I’m honoured that I’ve been chosen as the next CEO of this fabulous organisation.

“I’ve seen first-hand the strength of the Black Country Chamber and the difference it makes to the businesses doing remarkable things across Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity to build on the strong foundations Sarah and the team have put in place and support our region in continually punching above our weight on a national and global scale.”

Henrietta Brealey, CEO of the GBCC, said: “I am absolutely delighted for Raj and for the Black Country Chamber on his appointment as chief executive.

“Having worked with him for the past decade, I have seen first-hand the energy, commitment and leadership he brings, and this is a thoroughly well-deserved next step.
