The Government has released the findings of its Net Zero Review, led by Chris Skidmore MP. The review was commissioned to ensure that delivering on Net Zero targets did not place an unnecessary burden on businesses and customers.

In the review, Mr Skidmore calls on the Government to move further and faster in the pursuit of Net Zero.

A number of conclusions are highlighted in the review:

  • Net Zero is creating a new era of change and opportunity and the UK must act decisively to seize the economic opportunities that exist and smooth the transition, limiting the impact on businesses and consumers.
  • The benefits of investing in Net Zero today outweighs the costs and unlocking the ambition of places and communities will deliver the most effective and successful version of Net Zero. Indeed, Net Zero has the capability to improve lives however, work is needed to secure the benefits and minimise the costs.
  • Net Zero 2050 remains the right target for the UK, backed by the science. Significant government action is required by the UK to achieve Net Zero.

Kuran Singh (pictured), policy advisor at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) said: “The government must ensure it remains committed in the transition towards Net Zero, and must utilise the findings and recommendations outlined in the report ”

“The transition and the economic opportunities associated with Net Zero will define the future of the United Kingdom and provide ample opportunities for economic growth and the creation of jobs.

“It is therefore crucial that the Government takes the appropriate actions required, to stay competitive in an international market that will be defined by the green economy, providing direct support to businesses enabling them to compete with international firms.

“The Chamber will continue to work in supporting the Greater Birmingham business community in their transition to Net Zero. The Chamber 's flagship campaign on sustainability, the Sustainable Business Series, recently concluded having released daily content on achieving sustainability across the month of October, culminating with the Sustainable Business Series Conference in November.

“The Sustainable Business Series will return in 2023 and will look to provide guidance and insight into how firms can best achieve Net Zero. Sponsorship opportunities are available ”
