Government unveils post-Covid recovery plan in Queen's Speech

New legislation to support skills, planning reform and proposals to transform rail and bus connectivity were among the priorities set out in the Queen 's Speech today.

In the speech, which is written for her by ministers, the Queen said: “My government's priority is to deliver a national recovery from the pandemic that makes the United Kingdom stronger, healthier and more prosperous than before.

“To achieve this, my government will level up opportunities across all parts of the United Kingdom, supporting jobs, businesses and economic growth and addressing the impact of the pandemic on public services. ”

Included in the 30 bills announced by the Queen were:

  • New legislation to support a lifetime skills guarantee, helping people access high quality education and training throughout their lives
  • New proposals to transform connectivity by rail and bus via the High Speed Rail Bill
  • 5G coverage and gigabit capable broadband will be extended
  • A new Subsidy Control Bill to support businesses and new legislation to simplify public sector procurement
  • Eight new freeports to be introduced across the country
  • A renewed commitment to invest in new green industries in order to create jobs as part of the UK 's commitment to achieve net zero green house gas emissions by 2050
  • New planning laws to allow more houses to be built
  • The Armed Forces Covenant will now be enshrined in law
