Heritage exhibition digs deep into Staffordshire's underground past

A captivating exhibition at the Staffordshire History Centre is inviting visitors to explore the county’s past through the landscape, raw materials and industries that shaped its identity.

‘Beneath Our Feet,’ running until 6 September, is a free summer showcase that brings Staffordshire’s underground heritage to life through rare artifacts, displays and family-friendly activities.

From salt workers’ clogs to chain-making tools and vintage toy farms, the exhibition reveals the stories of those who powered the region’s industrial rise.

The exhibition marks a milestone in the £8.7 million Staffordshire History Centre project, made possible by a major grant of £4.8 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The investment ensures the statutory preservation of Staffordshire’s archives, safeguarding centuries of history for future generations, while transforming the centre into a dynamic space for learning and exploration.

Hayley Coles, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, said: “This exhibition is a brilliant example of how we’re breathing new life into our fascinating history.

“Running throughout August, ‘Beneath our Feet’ offers an amazing insight into the county’s past.

“It shows how the natural resources and the landscapes have impacted the lives and industries of Staffordshire’s people. I’d encourage families and history lovers alike to come and explore the stories that lie beneath Staffordshire’s soil.”

Located on Eastgate Street in Stafford, the history centre is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, offering a welcoming space for all to connect with Staffordshire’s rich and diverse heritage.
