Historian to be confirmed as Birmingham Institute president

Professor Sir David Cannadine has been elected as the Birmingham and Midland Institute 's next president.

The British author and historian, who specialises in modern history, Britain, and the history of business and philanthropy, will be the 168th president in the organisation 's history.

President-elect Sir Cannadine (pictured) will be formally confirmed at the institute 's annual general meeting, taking place virtually on 10 April.

Dr Serena Trowbridge, senior vice-president of the insititute, commented: "It is a huge pleasure to welcome Sir David Cannadine as the 168th president of the Birmingham & Midland Institute in 2021.

“Sir David 's far-reaching contribution to historical studies is matched by his dedication to public service, making him an ideal president to follow in the steps of the many renowned figures who have preceded him as president of the institute. We are very much looking forward to working with Sir David over the next year."

The Birmingham and Midland Institute, based, on Margaret Street, was formed in 1854 and looks to promote education and learning in the city.
