Hospital charity funds new equipment to support community services
Solihull Hospital Charity has funded three new bladder scanners to support nurses treating patients when visiting them in the community.
The new equipment enables nurses to carry out essential bladder assessments in patients’ homes, supporting early diagnosis, reducing unnecessary hospital visits and helping patients remain safely at home.
Bladder scanners are non-invasive devices to assess bladder volume and function. Many community teams have limited access to this vital piece of equipment and rely on referrals to hospital services for assessment. The new scanners have helped to bridge the gap between community and hospital services, providing better care for patients and a more positive experience.
The hospital charity funded the new bladder scanners which are more lightweight and portable. This has made a huge difference to staff as they travel to visit patients at home meaning they need to carry equipment around with them.
Bladder scanners are especially important for patients with conditions such as urinary retention or incontinence, as well as those with mobility challenges or complex health needs. Having access to this technology in the community allows nurses to make quicker decisions, initiate timely treatment and avoid hospital admissions.
Jessica Burton, clinical lead for Solihull Community Bladder and Bowel Services said, “We are incredibly grateful to Solihull Hospital Charity for funding the new scanners. Bladder scanners make a real difference to the way we deliver care. They reduce the need for catheterisation, help us prevent infections and ultimately improve patients’ comfort and outcomes.”
Solihull Hospital Charity plays a vital role in enhancing the patient experience at Solihull Hospital and the Community Services. The Charity funds additional equipment, specialist services and improvements to the hospital environment to make a real difference to patients receiving treatment, as well as the staff caring for them.
