Food and beverage students at Burton and South Derbyshire College having been baking their socks off in efforts to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer.

Students held a bake sale in the college's Mulberry Bistro as part of the national Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake-Off campaign.

Staff and students were invited to purchase beautifully hand-decorated cupcakes at £1 each, along with doughnuts, lemon cake and Bakewell tart, all priced at 50p per slice. The students raised £40.40 for Stand Up To Cancer, which will go towards saving lives.

Stand Up To Cancer is a fundraising campaign led by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 which brings the UK together to speed up progress in life-saving cancer research. Funds raised will see three in four people in the UK surviving cancer by 2034, with two in for four surviving today and one in four having survived in the 1970s.

Speaking about the students ' bake sale and fundraiser, Mulberry Bistro supervisor, Louise Tanner said: “The learners are always trying to find new ways to raise awareness and support the work of a range of charities.

"Inspired by the Bake-Off special, their passion for worthy causes and making a difference, they planned, organised and held the event themselves, which was a great success and received many positive comments from college staff. ”
