How saying yes can define your career journey
Written by Becca Horley, medical negligence solictor at Fletchers
Saying yes to opportunities has been a defining theme throughout both my personal and professional journey.
I’m the first person in my family to study law and the first to become a lawyer. Unlike many people entering the profession, I didn’t grow up knowing solicitors or having established connections within law firms.
Opportunities to gain insight into the legal world weren’t readily available to me, so I had to be proactive, brave and willing to put myself forward.
From networking events to work experience placements and mentoring opportunities, I learnt early on that if I wanted to build a career in law, I would need to seek opportunities out rather than wait for them to come to me.
Throughout my career, some of my most rewarding experiences have come from stepping outside my comfort zone.
Every time I’ve said yes to something that felt daunting, it has opened doors to new opportunities, introduced me to inspiring people and helped me grow in confidence.
Many of the people I met through networking events and professional initiatives have become some of my closest friends, trusted mentors and valuable professional contacts who continue to support and refer work to me today.
One of the most significant examples has been public speaking. For years it was something I found intimidating, but it was a skill I really wanted to develop. In 2025, I made a conscious decision to face that fear and started accepting speaking opportunities whenever I could.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of speaking to rooms of more than 200 law firm leaders, sharing insights at industry events and talking to aspiring solicitors through initiatives with Birmingham Law Society and National Careers Week.
Those experiences have not only improved my confidence but have created opportunities I could never have imagined when I first entered the profession.
My advice to anyone who is nervous about stepping outside their comfort zone is simple: take the chance. Growth rarely happens when we stay where we feel comfortable.
Some opportunities won’t lead exactly where you expected, but each one teaches you something new, builds resilience and expands your network.
More often than not, the opportunities that feel the most daunting are the ones that can have the greatest impact on your personal and professional development.
