University Hospitals Birmingham charity has highlighted the importance of leaving gifts in wills during 'Remember a Charity Week'.

The week, which runs from 11to 17 September is an opportunity to consider leaving a gift in wills for a charity that has helped each individual personally.

Throughout Remember a Charity Week, University Hospitals Birmingham Charity will be showcasing some of the projects funded through gifts in wills to highlight how important these donations are and the difference they can make.

In 2013, the charity funded the state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine, CyberKnife which is able to treat patients with previously inoperable tumours, giving them a second chance at life.

Consultant clinical scientist, Geoff Heyes said, “The CyberKnife machine is able to treat small, well defined tumours in traditionally difficult-to-reach parts of the body which, if damaged, would have devastating effects.

“Over the last 10 years it has treated nearly 3,000 patients. If you're in any doubt about whether leaving a gift in your will can make a difference, it absolutely does.”

UHB Charity has also refurbished the Children's Outpatients Department at Solihull Hospital, transforming the area into a more child-friendly place and making hospital visits less daunting for younger patients.

Helen Rooney, paediatric nurse at the department said, “This refurbishment means so much to the team on the unit. Some children have lifelong conditions such as cystic fibrosis or diabetes which means we have to see them regularly for check-ups.

“We love that the new area is fun and playful, tailored for our patients' needs.”

Charlotte Schofield, director of Fundraising at UHB Charity said, “Gifts in wills enable us to continue to support staff, patients and their families during difficult times.

“Remember a Charity Week is an opportunity to think about how you can make a real difference to your local community by leaving a gift in your will. Your support can help us change and save more lives across our hospitals. Even a small amount can make a huge difference.”
