An inland customs border facility could be introduced in Solihull to ease congestion at ports, according to reports.

A 2km site at Birmingham Airport has reportedly been identified as a site for customs officers to check HGVs in a bid to reduce hold-ups at ports such as Dover.

The Brexit transition period ended on 31 December, meaning extra checks on goods destined for Europe in the future.

Reports claim the site will have room for HGVs and employ 150 HM Revenue and Customs staff.

A Government spokesperson said it was making “significant preparations ” after a Commons Public Accounts Committee warned of the risk of “serious disruption and delay. ”
