Inspiring student success stories shape college campaign

A man told by a hospital consultant that studying would not be possible after a road traffic accident is one of the inspiring students to have shaped South and City College Birmingham's new enrolment campaign.

Matt Davis (pictured) suffered frontal lobe damage after the accident in 2017 but was determined to defy his consultant's prognosis.

In 2018, a chance discovery of a space documentary sparked an interest in astrophysics and astronomy.

Matt returned to higher education at South and City College Birmingham, where he achieved GCSEs in combined science, maths, statistics, and English.

He then completed an Access to Higher Education in Science course, for which he won a Brian May Access to HE learner award for outstanding commitment to Study.

Matt has now been accepted to University of Birmingham, where he will study physics and astrophysics BSc.

Another inspirational student is Fardus Abdullahi, one of the college's health and beauty alumni who has successfully launched a beauty salon business across two continents.

Fardus studied Beauty Level 2 and 3 at South and City College Birmingham. She launched her business, Heaven Skincare Salon, from her living room during the Covid-19 pandemic, just after she had finished her Level 2 qualification.

She combined running her salon with part-time work and her Level 3 qualification at the College. Following this early success, Fardus was able to open her first branch in Birmingham, before expanding to Mogadishu, Somalia.

Mike Hopkins, principal of South and City College Birmingham, added: “Our new summer enrolment campaign is called The Right Choice, and shows how our seven campuses and breadth of courses enable students to make the right choice for their education, for their career, and for their future.

“Matt and Fardus are truly awe-inspiring examples of the hundreds of students who make the right choices with us every year and I'd like to congratulate them on their success.”

The college's The Right Choice campaign consists of video and out of home (OOH) messaging. View the full video here.

This latest video campaign showcases the range of courses and qualifications available at South and City College Birmingham, and how this wide variety of opportunities enables its learners to make The Right Choice for their future career.
