The members of the Rotary Club of Bretby have donated a cheque for £14,500 to support Burton YMCA 's appeal for funds with which to purchase a replacement van.

The current van, which is used for collecting and delivering furniture and other large items donated for sale in the YMCA 's shop on Borough Road, has reached the end of its economic life. The van is needed to help the furniture shop provide a vital source of income and helps people in the local community receive good quality and reasonably priced house-hold wares.

At a time when a lot of charities are still coming to terms with the fall in income due to the after-effects of Covid and the impact of the higher living costs, The Rotary Club stepped in to help YMCA Burton fundraise for a new van.

Bretby Rotary Club president Graham Rose, said: “Both the YMCA and Rotary share common aims in seeking to make a positive difference to the lives of those in crisis, and we have supported the YMCA over many years, by taking part in the annual Sleepout, and donating funds and food to the YMCA Food Bank on a regular basis through collections at our regular Club meetings, so it was only fitting that we sought to help out with their latest appeal, to enable them to continue with their valuable work in our local community. ”

Burton YMCA CEO Paul Laffey said: “Burton YMCA is incredibly grateful to Bretby Rotary Club for all of their fantastic fundraising achievements. We were delighted to accept such a large donation from their Club President Graham Rose and Rotarian Norman Carpenter.

“This funding will allow the YMCA to purchase a much-needed van for our furniture project. It will allow the YMCA to continue supporting many families with the re-distribution of excellent quality furniture and at the same time preventing 1,000s of household effects from ending up in landfill. ”
