Mattress manufacturer appoints Burton firm to manage waste

Burton-based Willshee 's Waste & Recycling has been appointed by Usleep, one of the UK 's leading manufacturers of foam, spring and hybrid mattresses, to provide a total waste management service that guarantees zero waste to landfill.

This contract win is contributing to the waste firm's current year on year growth rate of over 20 per cent.

David Cunningham, divisional health and safety lead for Usleep, signed up with Willshee 's after visiting their new depot in Swadlincote which provides the most advanced Materials Recycling Facility in the region.

He said: “I was really impressed with this new site and commend Willshee 's for this investment. It 's great for manufacturers to have total peace of mind around having the best possible waste solution and which you can witness first-hand. ”

Usleep waste streams are segregated on site into cardboard, polythene, wood, metal and general waste before being collected by Willshee 's and processed.

What is left is made into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) which is then supplied to Energy from Waste plants.

SRF is already carbon offset - creating more environmentally friendly energy, with no waste going to landfill.

David added: “More and more consumers are expecting high environmental and sustainable solutions from the products and services they buy. In line with this, here at Usleep we are always looking to lead the way with regard to good practice when it comes to sustainability.

"So, it is absolutely critical that our waste is not only processed with zero waste going to landfill but also that the audit trail is totally robust and transparent.

Usleep operates from two sites, using state-of-the-art machinery which has created one of the most efficient automated mattress production processes in the UK.

Willshee 's is the largest independent waste and recycling company in the East Midlands region and has been providing waste and recycling solutions for over 37 years.
