Key figures from three local Chambers of Commerce have been sharing their thoughts on sustainability and net zero – after attending Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce’s Sustainable Business Conference.

The conference, which took place at Conference Aston, brought the month-long Sustainable Business Series to a close and featured keynotes from WSP executive director Rachel Skinner and Transport for West Midlands executive director Anne Shaw.

There were also several panel discussions designed to equip businesses with advice which will help them on their journey to net zero.

The conference brought together members and representatives from across the GBCC group.

Among the attendees was Royal Sutton Coldfield Chamber committee member Neil Davis, managing director of 3D Facilities Support, whose key takeaway was that there is “no silver bullet” to achieving perfect net zero results – but having a plan is essential.

He said: “Currently, decarbonisation and sustainability perfection is virtually impossible and there is no ‘silver bullet’.

“But, having a ‘plan’ together with implementation and continually reviewing for best practice is of utmost importance.”

Asked for one piece of advice he would share on the back of the conference, he said: “Don’t think you’re being judged and it’s not a competition.

“Just start doing the right things, small changes. Take those first steps and get going. It starts at the top!”

Chris Wheeler, from Auditel, who is vice president of Cannock Chase Chamber, said: “It was great to hear sustainability plans from such a wide range of sectors - education, banking, building design, manufacturing industry, transport, housing, energy generation...

“Rachel Skinner asked: ‘are we acting as if there's an emergency?'. Her point was that there is still a lot of complacency.

“She also acknowledged the complexity and challenges of reducing emissions.

“A recurring theme was a message of 'Just Do It!'. It's best to just get started with reducing emissions, even small actions help - start simple.

“My first step would be ‘keep going’.”

Emma Smith, from Grace Cares CIC, who are members of Lichfield and Tamworth Chamber, added: “The general theme seemed to be that lots of people are not sure where to start or what to do, try not to be overwhelmed and just do something, every small change helps.

“Get your team involved and get them to understand your goals and encourage them to want to be part of the change.

“Reach out to others and ask for help, guidance and advice, this needs to be collaborative. Start thinking about all of your processes and how they can be improved, make sure any changes you make are documented and evidenced.

“Talk to your suppliers, do they have environmental policies in place, consider switching to suppliers with fewer carbon emissions as this will have an impact on your overall carbon emissions output.”
