An innovation aimed at improving the way patients with mobility issues are supported is now available on the UK market.

The Mobility Assistance Vest (MAV), designed by Malcolm Tallis, director at Tallis Mobility and manufactured by 3ET, officially launched at the Scottish Manual Handling Forum in Glasgow in May 2024.

The product is now gaining interest from healthcare professionals and industry leaders across the country.

The idea was sparked during a challenging moment when Malcolm, a healthcare professional, was assisting a patient from the floor.

The task was made difficult by the patient’s pre-existing conditions and the lack of safe and practical ways to provide hands-on support.

The first prototype was sewn on a kitchen table by Malcolm’s aunt using basic materials.

Although the project was initially put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was revived years later when another patient required support getting up from the floor.

After identifying the right manufacturing partner in 3ET, the vest was refined and formally introduced to the market.

Since its debut, the MAV has been showcased at industry exhibitions around the UK.

Tallis Mobility has now entered procurement processes to supply the NHS and other health and care providers.

The first MAV customer was a woman recovering from spinal surgery, who required extra support during physiotherapy. The vest gave both her and the medical staff added confidence, allowing for more effective rehabilitation.

Malcolm Tallis said: “Seeing the MAV in action, helping someone regain confidence and mobility, is incredibly rewarding. It’s a simple idea, but one that makes a real difference.”
