Mondel?z International has announced that they will switch to 100 per cent renewable electricity across all six of their production sites in the UK.

One of these sites includes the Midlands ' iconic Bournville Factory, the home to Cadbury production in the UK, as well as the Sheffield-based Bournville RDQ centre (home to Maynards Bassetts), Minworth, Marlbrook, Chirk and Crediton.

Mondel?z International has signed a contract that will provide all six production sites with sustainable electricity that has been generated solely in Great Britain.

The move contributes to the company 's global commitment to reducing 10 per cent of end-to- end CO2 emissions by 2025.

Through the use of UK sourced renewable electricity, they will be able to offset the equivalent of 2,900 people 's annual CO2 emissions. This is calculated using the UK government 's findings that the average Brit emits around seven tonnes of CO2 annually.

Louise Stigant, UK managing director at Mondel?z International, said: “Using 100 per cent renewable electricity, that is also generated here, across our six production sites is a huge step towards reducing our carbon emissions here in the UK, whilst supporting our global target and our mission to make our snacks in the right way. ”

The UK now joins other Mondel?z production sites such as Mexico, Australia and New Zealand in their sustainability operations.

The company have already achieved their aims of reducing 20 per cent of their C02 emissions across global production sites by the end of 2020.

This was made possible by an increased use of renewable electricity, moving from just eight per cent to 23 per cent of total electricity used.

In turn, this enabled the company to reduce C02 emissions by 147,109 tonnes, an annual reduction equivalent to taking 31,993 cars off the road for one year.

Commenting on what the move will mean on a smaller scale for the region, Steve McCabe, Birmingham MP for Selly Oak said: “This is a significant step for the region and my constituents.

“I am passionate about reducing our emissions and so this move by Mondel?z International for Bournville gives me a huge sense of pride. ”
