More restrictions to be eased but firms still face hardship - Chamber
The Government must recognise that many firms are still facing hardship ahead of an announcement on the final stage of England 's roadmap out of lockdown, business leaders said today.
Boris Johnson will this afternoon set out the details of Step Four of the roadmap which will come into effect from 19 July.
The Prime Minister is expected to announce the next steps on social distancing, face coverings and working from home - with some media reports claiming all of those orders will be dropped completely.
However, he is not expected to address self-isolation, rules in schools or travel restrictions.
Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce say that while the announcement will bring positive news for many businesses, others will still require financial support to adapt to life after lockdown.
Chief executive Henrietta Brealey (pictured) said: “Businesses up and down the country will be listening intently as the PM looks set to offer some much needed clarity on the final stage of the roadmap later today.
“As is often the case with this administration, much of the detail has been leaked in advance and those operating in the hospitality and events sectors will be particularly pleased to hear that further details on social distancing and capacity requirements will be announced.
“However, we also hope the PM will formally recognise that many businesses are suffering incredible hardships and will still require financial assistance over the next few months as we adapt to the post lockdown landscape.
“The tone of the Government seems to have shifted in the last couple of weeks with much more emphasis on the need for businesses and individuals to take greater responsibility in applying their own judgement and we would encourage businesses to maintain sensible measures particularly in relation to testing and hygiene levels as the threat of Covid-19 remains undiminished.
“As always, the Chamber will be on hand to share details on what the latest announcements mean for businesses in the region and look to address any areas of concern that might arise. ”
However, Ms Brealey said the Government must ensure the lifting of restrictions does not result in another spike in cases and, in turn, more lockdowns.
She added: “Businesses desperately want to get back to business as usual but even more critically they cannot afford another lockdown.
“Repeatedly stopping and starting a business at short notice is far more costly than operating under Covid measures or waiting to start a few weeks longer.
“The Government must be sure that these measures will not result in the NHS becoming overwhelmed and further lockdowns to come. ”
