A new campaign will help businesses overcome challenges and grasp opportunities associated with net zero carbon emissions requirements.

Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce will be holding its first Sustainable Business Series: Net Zero campaign alongside Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, starting on 30 September.

In April, the government legislated that CO2 emissions must fall by 78 per cent by 2035, based on 1990 levels (a reduction of approximately 60 per cent from today 's levels), to accelerate progress to the 2050 net zero target.

Additionally, with COP26 in November, international climate action and associated policies are likely to increase to meet the challenge of the climate crisis.

The Chambers ' net zero campaign will help West Midlands based firms gain perspectives from business leaders on why net zero is important and how the region 's business community can rise to meet the net zero challenge.

The campaign will focus on four topics, relating to net zero transition, including energy, transport, circular economy and sustainable business management, and culminate with a Sustainable Business Summit, taking place on 3rd November, focusing on how firms can be more sustainable and resilient.

Henrietta Brealey, chief executive of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, commented that the campaign will help firms learn practical tips to meet opportunities associated with green recovery from the pandemic.

She said: “Despite the pressing impact of Covid-19, we have seen climate change and net zero, continue to rapidly accelerate up businesses ' agendas. That 's why we are excited to be partnering with the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber to deliver this campaign, and help support businesses across the region

“This campaign will help local businesses and industry overcome the challenges and grasp the opportunities that the net zero transition can bring, such as improved competitiveness and reputation.

“As we recover from the coronavirus pandemic, businesses across the region have an opportunity to couple economic and environmental progress to drive a green recovery. Through the Sustainable Business Series, businesses can learn practical tips to meet that opportunity.

Will Hargreaves (pictured), environmental policy lead at the GBCC, added: “I 'm delighted the Chambers have partnered to deliver this campaign to help the business community navigate net zero.

“We encourage all businesses to look at developing their decarbonisation activity to increase their competitive advantage and help protect future business and generations.

“We know businesses want to do more to improve their progress on net zero, but often face barriers to move forward. This campaign will help reduce barriers to net zero progress and help businesses realise the many benefits that come with decarbonising ”
