In a recent presentation at the Net Zero Show, VANESSA EYLES, the MANAGING DIRECTOR of the WEST MIDLANDS CYBER RESILIENCE CENTRE, reminded her audience about the critical role of cybersecurity in the business world, especially for companies committed to sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint.

The UK faces a significant cybersecurity threat, with malicious individuals and groups seeking to profit from data theft or disrupt operations. Even small businesses are not immune to these risks. Vanessa offered valuable advice to safeguard against these threats, emphasising the importance of robust password practices, regular software updates, and vigilance regarding suspicious emails.

Organisations like the West Midlands Cyber Resilience Centre, in tandem with similar centres across the UK, play a pivotal role in fortifying businesses' defenses against cyber threats. Protecting against such threats ensures that the diligent efforts invested in sustainability initiatives do not go to waste.

Highlighting the importance of cyber security

Vanessa stressed the paramount significance of cybersecurity, particularly as companies diligently pursue sustainability goals and strive for carbon neutrality.

While acknowledging the commendable sustainability principles embraced by businesses, she cautioned that these endeavours could be compromised without robust cybersecurity measures in place. Cyberattacks have been elevated to a top-tier threat by the UK government and should not be underestimated.

Vanessa painted a vivid picture of the potential dangers, highlighting how hackers could gain access to an organisation's strategic plans, potentially selling them to competitors or publicly disclosing them without consent. Such actions can undermine the integrity of an organisation, be it a business or charity, rendering the entire operation vulnerable.

It's crucial to remember that cybercriminals are relentless, so even not for profit organisations are not exempt from their malicious intent. As Vanessa pointed out, "Cyber attackers don't care if you are trying to save the Earth." Their objectives range from causing total devastation to profiting from stolen data, which she likened to "the new currency."

Offering a beacon of hope, Vanessa highlighted the West Midlands Cyber Resilience Centre, a not-for-profit initiative led by law enforcement that assists businesses in strengthening their cybersecurity defences. Vanessa assured the audience, "We are here to help you become cyber safer," drawing an analogy to the government's health campaign and expressing her commitment to elevate companies "from zero cybersecurity up to a safer place."

What can your business action immediately to boost cyber security?

For immediate steps, Vanessa recommended adopting strong password practices, in line with government guidance that advocates the use of "three random words." She also emphasised the importance of anti-virus software, implementing multi-factor authentication, and fostering awareness about phishing emails. These deceptive emails can range from containing suspicious links to employing tactics such as enticing offers that seem "too good to be true" or instilling fear to compel compliance.

Vanessa left her audience with a poignant message: while commendable efforts are being made towards sustainability, the absence of robust cybersecurity measures means that "all of your hard work towards being Net Zero is not in vain." She expressed her gratitude to the audience for their attention, offering them tools and advice to safeguard their aspirations and data.
