New campaign launched to encourage safe disposal of asbestos
A new campaign aimed at reducing the risks posed by incorrectly disposed asbestos at the county’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) has been launched.
Asbestos is a hazardous material commonly found in homes built before 2000 and the campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers and the correct way to dispose of it.
Improperly bagged or unsealed asbestos waste poses a serious health risk to site staff and the public, and the council is urging residents to follow safety guidelines when bringing asbestos to the sites.
It must be double wrapped in heavy duty clear polythene and sealed securely with tape before it can be dropped off at one of the five sites that accept it.
There is a disposal restriction of four sheets (maximum 6ft x 3ft) or four bags (approximately 25kg rubble bags) per household every six months.
The campaign includes updated signs at the HWRCs, information leaflets and online resources to help residents understand the correct disposal process.
Andrew Mynors, Cabinet Member for Connectivity at Staffordshire County Council, said: “The safety of our staff and residents is always our top priority.
“This campaign is about raising awareness and making sure everyone knows how to handle asbestos responsibly. By working together, we can reduce the risks and ensure our recycling centres remain safe for all.
“I’d urge everyone to take a moment to learn the correct procedures. It really does make a difference.”
The HWRCs that accept asbestos waste in Staffordshire are Stafford, Cannock, Bilbrook, Leek and Burton.
Further details on safe asbestos disposal and how to prepare it for drop-off are available on the Staffordshire County Council website.
