People invited to walk in memory of loved ones
People from Birmingham and the surrounding area are being invited to come together this June and walk 2.5km or 10km in memory of someone special.
Birmingham Hospice’s Memory Walk will start and finish at the stunning Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston on Saturday 15 June.
Doors open at 4pm, and the event itself will begin with a moment of reflection at 5pm before participants warm up and set off on their chosen route.
Those taking part will be joining hundreds of supporters who come together and raise vital funds for the hospice each year, so that more people have the chance to be with their loved ones in their last moments.
At any one time, Birmingham Hospice is supporting around 1,000 local people living with a life-limiting illness – in Inpatient Units at Selly Park and Erdington, in the community, and in patients’ own homes.
It costs over £16 million to run these services each year and 40 per cent of that must come from fundraised income. The last few years have seen a big increase in costs, including the price of energy, food and drugs, meaning that the public’s support is more vital than ever.
Events officer Natalie Humphrey said: “Our Memory Walk is always a special evening, where people come together with family and friends to remember a loved one and raise vital funds for Birmingham Hospice at the same time.
“Hospices across the country are currently facing a financial crisis with the funding we receive not keeping up with ever-increasing costs, which means every penny we can raise from events like this really does count.”
Standard ticket prices for the event are £12 for adults, £3 for children including a medal (or free without a medal), or £50 for a team of up to five people. Participants are also invited to raise sponsorship to take part – there is no minimum amount, but every penny counts.
People will be invited to dedicate a heart in memory of who you’re walking for to be displayed on our memory wall at the Botanical Gardens for the evening. For an additional donation, they can also receive a keepsake heart to collect and take home on the day, as a reminder of a special evening.
