Hiring your first employee is a significant milestone. It signifies growth, increased productivity, and provides you with the opportunity to delegate tasks, allowing you to focus on running and growing your business.

Whilst it signifies great things, it is also extremely daunting and is often a decision that is left until later which then limits your own success.

So, what do you need to consider before doing anything else? These are my top five considerations before going any further:

1 Familiarise yourself with the legal requirements of hiring an employee

You will need to think about employment rights, minimum wage, working time regulations, documentation, pensions auto enrolment, insurance, payroll, national insurance costs, health & safety requirements, fire safety.

There are lots of resources online or contact me for guidance on HR and find a good Accountant for the rest (I can also help you with this!)

How much will you need to pay your new employee?

Setting a fair and competitive salary is crucial to attract and retain employees.

Small business owners often seek guidance on how to determine the appropriate salary based on factors such as industry standards, job responsibilities, location, and their own budgetary constraints. You may already have some part-time, ad-hoc resource that you rely on.

Hiring an employee is no longer fixed in the Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm territory we used to see 20 years ago. Today's world is all about flexibility, part-time, a great work-life balance. You have plenty of options to save costs if actually you need someone some of the time.

3 What benefits will you offer?

Deciding which employee benefits to offer can be challenging.

The Government set out minimum levels of pay during absence. maternity, paternity etc (statutory rates of pay). You might want to think about enhancing these, or offering additional benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, discounts, amongst many others.

This is all about setting your business apart from your competitors. Why would someone want to come and work for you AND stay there? There are many, many ways to attract and retain staff, some of them are free!

4 How will you handle payroll and tax responsibilities?

You need to understand payroll and tax obligations associated with employing someone.

They may have questions about payroll systems, tax withholding, filing requirements, and deadlines. You can run your own payroll in-house or use an Accountant to do this for you.

5 How will you create a positive work environment?

In today's tight labour market candidates have the upper hand and will be comparing your offering with your competitors. If they aren't happy, they will look elsewhere and pick up a new job relatively quickly.

So, how can you ensure you offer a positive work environment for employee satisfaction and productivity? Think about the culture of your business, effective communication channels, and promoting employee engagement and growth opportunities.

Take some time to think about these questions and get some ideas together. This is a great place to start exploring what you need to do before and after onboarding your first employee. If you do all of these things well, you will recruit a great asset to your business, and you'll also retain them and their expertise!
