Lichfield-based Legionella and Fire Safe Services have been shortlisted for the 'Contractor of the Year ' award at this year 's National Building & Construction Awards

The recognition is for a project at Jordan House in Birmingham, for Wates Group, which involved crucial fire stopping works in the older building block to ensure it met standards for the safety of the residents .

The other part of the project was to change the old existing soil pipe stances with minimal disruption.

This multi-occupancy property owned by Birmingham City Council needed old cast soil pipes replacing with fabricated modern stacks.

These are not only more sustainable, but meant the firm could install while the residents remained in their homes, minimising disruption and saving the council money on not having to provide temporary accommodation.

Wates operations manager Neil Stevenson said: "The challenges with carrying out construction work within a live environment requires a different mindset, with the priority being the end user at all times, ensuring disruption is kept to a minimum to people 's day to day lives.

“As a contractor you cannot just 'leave it until tomorrow ' so at times it requires you to go above and beyond, something Legionella & Fire Safe Services achieved on this project as they have the correct mindset and care that's always needed. ”

Managing director Steve Morris said: "I have to thank the team for this national recognition. Despite the difficulties during Covid, the teams adapted to ensure the projects were carried through and in a professional and caring way and this has continued to where we are today.

“I have always said we are nothing without the people and this recognition is for each and every one of them .

“We have increased our workforce with local talent and heavily invested in up skilling existing team members which has resulted in promotion to managerial positions within the company.

“We look forward to our next period of growth with new sustainable services focusing on not only our fire safety and legionella compliance services, but energy saving installations to help benefit businesses and the social housing sector. ”

The awards take place tomorrow in London.
