France will be moved to the government 's travel 'amber ' list from Sunday, while seven other nations have been added to 'green ' as part of widespread changes to the government 's traffic light system for travel.

It means fully-vaccinated passengers returning to England, Scotland and Northern Ireland from France no longer need to quarantine.

Germany, Austria and Norway are among seven nations being added to the green list as part of the changes.

Spain is to stay on the amber list, although the Department for Transport has advised that “arrivals from Spain and all its islands are advised to use a PCR test as their pre-departure test wherever possible ”.

Raj Kandola, head of policy at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “The decision to extend the green list of countries will offer a much needed boost to the aviation industry and associated travel sectors.

“Simplifying the traffic light system will help to boost consumer confidence and we are likely to see a spate of last minute bookings for overseas trips.

“Nevertheless, with passenger numbers still way short of historical levels, we would urge the Government to go further - reducing the cost of testing and giving longer notice of when a country is being moved between the tiers would be a step in the right direction. ”
