Social housing firm’s summer fun days hailed an overwhelming success

Trent and Dove family fun day

Hundreds of families enjoyed a summer to remember at two community fun days designed to bring people together.

The events, hosted by social housing landlord Trent & Dove, took place in Stapenhill and Horninglow, Burton upon Trent, as part of its long-held ambition to Transform Homes, Lives and Communities

More than 1,000 residents joined in the celebrations, with activities at Stapenhill ranging from meeting rabbits and Shetland ponies – provided by Miniature Shetland Therapy Ponies – to creative workshops and live entertainment.

Across both events, creative activities included making clay models, shoes using recycled materials and foliage and flowers to create beautiful garland crowns.

Trent & Dove CEO Ursula Bennion said: "Our two annual fun days were fantastic successes.

“We welcomed more than 1,000 people who participated in great activities and learned a little bit in a fun and creative way.

“It was wonderful to see so many partner organisations funding and running their own activities, showing the strength of collaboration in action.

“These events reflect our mission of ‘providing homes and services that enable people and communities to thrive’, and we’re proud to play a part in bringing people together.

"Thank you to our colleagues whose support ensured both events were a great success."

Crowds were entertained by The Brewhouse Arts Centre, which brought laughter with a puppet show and roving, live performances from The Babbling Vagabonds.

Arts charity People Express also made a welcome return, offering hands-on sessions in willow weaving, pottery, and clay modelling that proved popular with families.

Central Co-op, known for its slow cooker events at Trent & Dove’s Warm Spaces cafes, provided healthy snacks, while Burton Albion Community Trust ran its much-loved Beat the Goalie challenge.

The Horninglow fun day, held at the Kingfisher Project, carried special meaning as it marked the project’s 20th anniversary and paid tribute to its founder, Keith Lemare, who passed away earlier this year.

The Kingfisher Project has won awards for transforming a neglected site into a thriving wildlife haven. At the event, Trent & Dove unveiled a memorial bench and plaque in Mr Lemare’s honour – a permanent tribute within the gardens.

Trent & Dove head of customer and communities Rachael Hughes said: “It is a true honour to dedicate this memorial bench to Keith Lemare, whose vision and commitment founded the Kingfisher Project 20 years ago.

“His passion created opportunities and support that have touched countless lives, and this bench will stand as a lasting tribute to his legacy and the difference he made to our community."
