Solihull Sixth Form learner raises funds for school in West Africa after taking on sponsored hike
A learner at Solihull Sixth Form College has raised £500 for a school in West Africa after taking on a sponsored hike.
Year 13 student Adam Dar has joined the 2026 Team Gambia group, which will be travelling to The Gambia in November to volunteer at the Abuko Nursery and Lower Basic School.
Each student embarking on the visit is tasked with raising £400 for the school, which will be used to pay teachers, purchase resources and help improve facilities at the school.
Adam chose to climb Mount Snowdon in Wales with his family and asked friends and family to sponsor him, raising £500 for the school.
Adam (pictured) said: "It took me roughly 4 to 5 hours to reach the peak. The climb was tiring and longer than I expected but at the same time, the viewpoint of the landscape was amazing. I chose to take on this challenge because I really enjoy hiking.
“In addition, I have previously seen how many people who are raising money for charities go hiking and wear their shirts to make others aware of the charity they are supporting, so it felt like a good opportunity."
Anisa Lokat-Fanning, associate assistant principal at the College and a leader of the Team Gambia project this year, said: "I'm so proud of Adam for this fantastic achievement.
“The young people who are part of our Team Gambia volunteer project are taking on a big challenge in raising money for this incredibly worthwhile cause and when Adam and the other learners travel out to Africa, they will see just what a huge difference that money makes to the lives of the children at the Abuko Nursery and Lower Basic School."
This year's trip to The Gambia will be the 11th visit. To date, students at the College have raised £104,000 for the school, helping to build new classrooms and enable many more children to get an education.
