Summer reading challenge underway across Staffordshire
With book spines bending and pages turning, the Summer Reading Challenge is now in full swing across Staffordshire.
Running until Monday 15 September, the challenge invites children aged up to 11 years to read at least six books over the summer holidays.
Hundreds of events are also planned throughout July and August at libraries across Staffordshire in support of the challenge.
This year’s event is running with a ‘Story Garden’ theme to encourage children to read stories that explore the natural world.
Children can sign up for the challenge at their local library and it’s free to take part in.
Each visit to the library will be rewarded with a sticker for their collector’s card and those that complete the challenge will receive a medal, certificate and seed shape for planting.
Hayley Coles (pictured), Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, said: “It’s wonderful to see this year’s Summer Reading Challenge get underway.
“I’m incredibly proud of the efforts of our libraries, in partnership with The Reading Agency, to encourage children to read and explore stories that keep their literacy skills sharp while nourishing their imagination.
“Last year’s challenge was a huge success with thousands of families joining in and we hope to make this year’s even better.”
The Summer Reading Challenge is always a popular activity, with nearly 10,000 Staffordshire children taking part and more than 6,000 completing the challenge in 2024.
Last year also saw 5,622 children and 1,925 adults attend 319 events that took place during the summer. Of the children who were surveyed, 82 per cent said that they were better readers due to the challenge.
