Theatre project offers LGBTQ+ community a safe space to develop skills
Birmingham Rep theatre, in collaboration with Birmingham LGBT Centre, has announced a new project LGBTQTeeHee!
This project, created by Birmingham Rep’s Creative Learning team, is designed to provide a safe space for members of the LGBTQ+ community to develop comedy and public speaking skills.
Taking place across 10-weeks, this innovative programme is supported by professional comedians, such as renowned comedian, educator and comedy coach Angie Belcher (pictured).
Successful applicants will develop their comedic writing skills, develop a comedy persona, and hone their craft and material into creating a routine which will be performed live at the Birmingham Rep this November.
LGBTQTeeHee! is open to anyone from the LGBTQ+ community and will take place at Birmingham Rep and Birmingham LGBT Centre as part of BEDLAM Showcase, a celebration of the arts, mental health and wellbeing.
Birmingham Rep senior drama practitioner, Robert Beck, said: “Through comedy, we hope to build mental health resilience, reduce stigma and encourage honest discussions around mental health in a fun and supportive environment.”
The Birmingham Rep will be hosting a free Comedy Masterclass on Saturday, 3 August from 12pm to 4.30pm at Birmingham LGBT Centre. All are welcome to attend and learn more about the project and begin the process of creating their own stand-up comedy routine.
