Town council leader objects to proposed green belt housing development

The leader of Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council (RSCTC) has submitted a formal letter of objection to Severn Trent Water over proposals for a new housing development on green belt land off Lindridge Road.

Councillor Simon Ward says the letter of objection follows concerns from residents over the proposed development of up to 200 homes on the edge of Sutton Coldfield, next to New Hall Cemetery.

The Town Council has raised concerns about potential traffic congestion and pressure on local infrastructure.

Cllr Ward (pictured) said: "Protecting our Royal Town's Greenbelt is of upmost importance to the Town Council and our residents.

“This can be demonstrated by the amount of opposition to Birmingham City Council's previous proposal to identify areas of the Greenbelt as potential 'grey belt'.

“The Town Council has been at the forefront of supporting residents and arguing that the existing Greenbelt should be retained and that the grey belt sites previously identified were ill considered and inappropriate.

"It was therefore gratifying to note that the City Council has decided to listen and not progress the grey belt sites and focus on land within the urban area to build new housing, as evidenced in the latest iteration of the Birmingham Local Plan.

“Therefore, it is particularly disappointing to receive notification of STW's intention to submit a planning application for housing within the Greenbelt on land north of Lindridge Road.

"We need the right homes in the right places, not speculative builds that destroy our precious Green Belt for corporate profit."

The town council has called on residents to submit their own formal objections to the applicant ahead of the consultation deadline of 10 September 2026, via email at lindridge-road@consultationplace.com.
