A new training course providing businesses with an introduction to export controls and licensing is being run by Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

The online course is taking place on Monday 29 April (9.30am to 12.30pm).

The course is important for companies involved in international trade who plan to export controlled goods, as they may need an export licence to do so.

These licences are designed to regulate and control specific types of goods entering and leaving the country.

Attendees of the half-day session will learn about the following:

  • Introduction to export controls
  • Reasons for needing a licence
  • UK Legislation
  • UK Strategic Controls List- Military and Dual use lists
  • Types of licence
  • OGELs
  • Adhering to the T&Cs
  • Reading an OGEL
  • Individual licences
  • SPIRE and the application process
  • Other export controls- USA, Trade controls & Sanctions
  • Compliance

The GBCC’s training manager Leah Quarmby (pictured) said: “There are many industries that need to apply for a licence to export their products, and don’t always know they need to, or know which license to request as there are multiple.

“If you work in an industry that exports items such as military goods, including firearms, ammunition, or related equipment, animals or animal products, drugs, medicines, or medical devices, radioactive substances, diamonds, plants or plant products, or chemicals and pesticides, you may need a licence.

“If you need a licence and the type you may need will depend on the destination of the goods, and their end use.”

The course will also help attendees differentiate between the types of licenses available and understand what could happen if they do not hold a licence for certain products.
