Trio to lift the lid on stellar broadcasting careers

Three major broadcasters from the world of sport and entertainment are joining forces to reveal what really happened behind the scenes.

Nick Owen, Pat Murphy and Jim Rosenthal will be appearing at Huntingdon Hall, Worcester on Wednesday 20 March (7.30pm).

There will be stories from football and rugby union World Cups, Ashes cricket battles, the glamour of Formula 1, Grand Nationals and FA Cup finals to working with Muhammad Ali, Alex Ferguson, Ian Botham, Brian Clough and Michael Schumacher.

Those in attendance will also hear about life on the breakfast TV and Midlands Today sofas.

The trio first worked together 50 years ago on BBC Radio Birmingham and have remained firm friends throughout their careers.

Jim’s stellar CV includes covering 153 Grand Prix for ITV Sport, working on eight football and three rugby World Cups, as well as fronting the network’s boxing coverage during what is considered the ‘golden age’ of British boxing.

Owen, who is back to full health after overcoming prostate cancer, has just completed 25 years of presenting BBC TV’s Midlands Today.

After cutting his teeth presenting sport on the old ATV/Central News programme, he was one of the first faces on ITV’s Breakfast Show and within two months had formed an enduring presenting partnership with Anne Diamond, which is widely credited with saving the programme.

For ITV Sport, Nick presented the Olympics coverage in 1988 and the Football World Cup from Italy in 1990, as well as commentating during the 1992 World Cup.

Murphy is the longest-serving contributor to BBC Radio’s Sports Report on Saturday afternoons, having clocked up more than 40 years on the world’s longest-running sports radio show.

He was written over 40 sports books, including acclaimed biographies of Ian Botham and Brian Clough, as well as collaborating on book with the likes of Imran Khan, Viv Richards, Andrew Flintoff, Alec Stewart, Bob Willis and Graham Gooch.

Tickets for this evening of sporting anecdotes are priced £25.50 available from the Worcester Live box office (01905 611427).
