The US and UK’s commitment to close collaboration on AI safety has been welcomed by transatlantic business leaders.

During this month’s UK AI Safety Summit in London, the Biden-Harris administration pledged close co-operation on AI safety, which trade body BritishAmerican Business believes will put the “transatlantic corridor at the forefront of global leadership in AI”.

The original commitment to AI safety was set out in the Atlantic Declaration signed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and president Joe Biden in the summer.

Duncan Edwards, CEO of BritishAmerican Business, part of the British American Business Network, said: “The announcements from the Biden-Harris Administration in London show that the transatlantic corridor is at the forefront of global leadership in AI.

“The impact of AI on our societies will be driven just as much by technology as it will be by policy and regulation. BAB welcomes the commitment for close collaboration on AI safety, which will see the US and the UK work together on AI guidelines, standards and risk assessment.

“The undeniable appeal of AI as a force for good needs to be balanced with safety, risk and regulatory considerations. The announcements reflect the US and UK’s joint vision to play a leading role in charting the way for the responsible growth of AI across the globe.

“We welcome this week’s AI Safety Summit which builds on the US and the UK governments commitment to cooperate on AI safety, as set out in the Atlantic Declaration, signed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Biden in June.”
