The University of Birmingham is hosting a debate on free speech next week.

The 'Are we free to disagree? ' event takes place at the Edgbaston campus on Monday at 6pm.

Hosted by Radio 4 's Ritula Shah, the 'Vice-Chancellor 's Great Debate ' will feature panellists including prominent social commentator, Toby Young, former MP Ruth Smeeth and legal expert, Smita Jamdar.

The right to freedom of speech is protected under common law in the UK, which means that both the public and the press are able to share what they think, feel and believe without censorship, even where the expression of their views may shock, disturb or offend the deeply-held beliefs of others.

The debate will ask to what extent should we rely on 'common sense ' to ensure that this privilege is wielded responsibly?

The subject is timely and in light of the proposed Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill that would impose requirements for universities and students' unions to protect freedom of speech.
