An innovative electric vehicle charging hub with integrated solar panels is now operational and welcoming drivers at The Maltings car park.

East Staffordshire Borough Council have installed a cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) charging hub.

The Papilio3 unit, developed by renewable energy specialists 3ti, provides 12 fast EV charging points, part powered by integrated solar panels, offering sustainable charging right in the heart of the town centre.

Since becoming operational, the facility has been steadily attracting EV drivers from across the area, with the unit's 42 solar panels generating clean electricity to power approximately 64,000 miles of emission-free driving annually.

The charging points offer speeds of 7kW, 11kW, or 22kW, making them ideal for town centre visits, shopping trips, and longer stays.

Cllr Dennis Fletcher, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: "It's fantastic to see this innovative facility now serving our community and attracting visitors from across the area.

“This represents practical climate action that benefits both residents and businesses, making Uttoxeter more accessible to the growing number of EV drivers while generating clean, renewable energy right in the town centre."

Alex Tupman, CEO of 3ti, said: "We’re delighted to see Papilio3 making a real difference in Uttoxeter.

“This installation at The Maltings Car Park shows how solar-powered charging can be delivered quickly, sustainably, and in a way that directly benefits both drivers and the wider community.

“By combining renewable energy generation with convenient EV charging, East Staffordshire Borough Council is demonstrating real leadership in accelerating the energy transition - and we’re proud that 3ti’s technology is playing a central role in that journey.”

Councillor Paul Walker, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Cultural Development, added: "This innovative charging hub is an excellent addition to Uttoxeter's town centre and aligns perfectly with our regeneration vision.

“The Maltings site is a key focus for our development plans, and this installation demonstrates how we can deliver practical improvements that enhance visitor experience while we progress our longer-term regeneration goals.

“The facility will attract EV-driving visitors to spend more time in our town, benefiting local businesses and helping to position Uttoxeter as a forward-thinking, accessible destination."
