A stunning tribute to Birmingham icon Benjamin Zephaniah will take centre stage as Acorns Children’s Hospice opens its garden for a magical fete this September.

The striking mural of the late poet, author and activist will be on view to the public for one day only at the charity’s Birmingham Hospice Garden Fete on Sunday 13 September.

This special event promises a day out for all ages, with music, stalls, garden games, delicious food and entertainment, all in aid of Acorns vital care for seriously ill local children.

Jo Thomas, area fundraiser at Acorns, said: “We’re really excited to welcome families into our gardens for what is set to be a beautiful and meaningful day.

“It’s a rare chance for the community to see our wonderful gardens and the very special mural of the late Acorns Patron, Benjamin Zephaniah.

“This fete is all about bringing people together – a spirit reflected in so much of Benjamin’s life and work – and we hope you’ll feel that same sense of community, whether you’re browsing the stalls, enjoying the live entertainment, or simply soaking up the atmosphere.

“Every penny raised makes the biggest difference to local children and their families. Be sure to book early as tickets are limited, we can’t wait to see you there!”

The hospice gardens on Oak Tree Lane will be transformed into a lively celebration of community spirit where visitors can enjoy live performances from local musicians, browse stalls offering books, toys and gifts and play classic garden games.

There will also be special guest appearances from Acorns Ambassador Kia Pegg, star of TV’s Doctors and The Dumping Ground, and her co-star in the Tracy Beaker spin-off, actress, artist and social media star, Annabelle Davies.

Jo added: “We’re thrilled that Kia and Annabelle are joining us. Their energy and warmth will bring something extra special to the day, and we know our supporters, of all ages, will be just as excited to see them as we are.”

Families can also take part in a prize teddy bear hunt during the fete, as well as enjoy a variety of tasty treats, from cakes to ice cream, perfect for refuelling after a spin around the stalls.

Tickets to the fete are just £2 for adults and £1 for children. The fete is open from 11am to 3pm, with last entry at 2pm.

Acorns Children’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care for babies, children and young people with life limiting and life threatening conditions, and support for their families.

In the past year, the charity has cared for more than 780 children across the West Midlands, and supported over 1,000 families, including those who are bereaved. Children visit Acorns for rehabilitative respite, symptom management, emergency and end-of-life care.

This care and support are provided from Acorns three hospices, based in Birmingham, Walsall and Worcester, and in the community.

Acorns needs around £35,000 each day to provide its children’s hospice care, with two thirds of that amount coming from generous donations and fundraising by the local community.

Tickets to the Acorns in Birmingham Garden Hospice Fete are limited.
