The sentencing of a Russian journalist and the country 's decision not to resume gas supplies to Europe dominated the headlines as the conflict in Ukraine continued.

Monday 5 September

Ivan Safronov, a Russian reporter, was given a 22-year jail sentence after rejecting a deal. The trial is the latest in a series of crackdowns on Russia's independent media.

Russia has warned that it will not resume gas supplies along a key pipeline to Europe until sanctions are lifted.

Tuesday 6 September

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed calls by the UN nuclear agency for a safety protection zone at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Vladimir Putin has condemned Western sanctions imposed because of Russia's war in Ukraine. He said Russia was coping with the West's economic "aggression".

The European Union's executive body has proposed capping the price of Russian gas, within hours of Russia's leader condemning the idea as stupidity.

Ukraine's nuclear chief has suggested that United Nations peacekeepers could secure the Zaporizhzhia power station.

Ukraine has claimed responsibility for a series of air strikes on Crimea after a month of uncertainty over who was behind them.
