War in Ukraine: What happened this week?
The death of former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev at the age of 91 dominated the news as the war in Ukraine continued this week.
Here, Chamberlink Daily rounds up everything that happened over the past seven days.
Monday 29 August
An inspection team from the UN nuclear watchdog started making its way to Ukraine's embattled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the organisation's head said. Fighting around the facility has led to concern over the safety and security of the site.
European Union countries will face five to 10 terrible winters if nothing is done to reduce gas prices according to Belgium's energy ministers. Russia, which supplied the EU with 40 per cent of its gas last year, has in turn restricted supplies.
Russia alleged a second Ukrainianwas involved in Darya Dugina 's killing.
Tuesday 30 August
Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader who brought the Cold War to a peaceful end, has died aged 91. Mr Gorbachev took power in 1985 and introduced reforms, as well as opening up the Soviet Union to the world. But he was unable to prevent the slow collapse of the union, and many Russians blamed him for the years of turmoil that ensued. Outside Russia, he was widely respected, with the UN chief saying he had "changed the course of history".
The first shipment of grain from Ukraine to Africa since the war began docked in Djibouti.
Ukraine's military said it broke through Russia's first line of defence in the occupied Kherson region.
The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said that Himars missiles are changing the course of the war against Russia. The US-made system has been used to hit dozens of Russian targets.
The EU is giving more than five million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine, due to fears of an accident at Europe's largest nuclear power plant.
Despite the efforts to export Ukrainian grain, there are still fears that the war is pushing up global food prices. Arla, whose brands include Lurpak butter, says the fighting has pushed up farmers' costs.
The wholesale price of gas dropped sharply on signs that Europe is preparing to intervene directly in energy markets.
Wednesday 31 August
Fierce battles have been reported as Ukraine tries to retake the Russian-occupied southern Kherson region.
Boris Johnson paid tribute to Gorbachev's 'extraordinary' work, describing the former Soviet leader as someone who changed the world for the better.
Russia cut the amount of the gas it sends to Europe by shutting the key Nord Stream 1 pipeline for the second time this summer. It said the latest restrictions would last for three days, and were necessary to allow repairs.
Thursday 1 September
Russia has halted gas supplies to Europe via Nord Stream 1, saying repairs are needed.
The International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors have arrived at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southeastern Ukraine
Chairman of Lukoil, one of Russia 's largest oil companies and one of the only ones to criticise Putin 's invasion of Ukraine, fell from a window and died.
