War in Ukraine- What happened this week?

The UK announced further sanctions on Russian and Belarus this week as Ukrainian and UK officials gathered in further support of Ukraine 's investigations into the war crimes committed by Russia during the conflict.

Monday 9 May

The UK Government announces a new package of sanctions on Russia and Belarus targeting £1.7 billion worth of trade.

Attorney General Suella Braverman QC MP visits Ukraine to meet with Ukrainian Prosecutor General, Iryna Venediktova, and lead a delegation of war crimes experts in Poland as part of the UK 's support for Ukraine 's investigations into Russian atrocities.

Tuesday 10 May

The UK 's National Cyber Security assesses that the Russian Military Intelligence was behind an operation targeting commercial communications company Viasat in Ukraine in February.

Wednesday 11 May

Prime Minister Boris Johnson visits Sweden and Finland to discuss the war in Ukraine as both nations consider whether to join NATO.

Thursday 12 May

Finland 's leaders say that the country should apply to join NATO 'without delay ', with the country 's parliament expected to approve plans next week. Sweden could follow suit within days.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says that he cannot see how relations with Putin can be normalised following Russia 's invasion of Ukraine.
