War in Ukraine: What happened this week?

As the war in Ukraine continued, Boris Johnson this week addressed Ukrainian parliament to pledge further support.

The European Union also announced further sanctions again Russia - including plans to phase out crude oil imports over the next six months.

Saturday 30 April

Prime Minister Boris Johnson speaks with president Zelenskyy, reiterating his support for Ukraine and noting that the UK will continue to provide additional military aid to Ukraine.

Sunday 1 May

One-hundred civilians are evacuated from a Mariupol steel plant, where more than one thousand civilians are believed to be sheltering from Russian forces.

Monday 2 May

US intelligence reports suggest Russia will try to annex the separatist-occupied regions of Donetsk and Luhansk by mid-May.

Tuesday 3 May

Prime Minister Boris Johnson addresses the Ukrainian Parliament, announcing a new package of support from the UK Government totalling £300 million, including radars, heavy lift drones, and thousands of night vision devices.

The UK Government announces it is donating a fleet of 13 armoured vehicles to Ukraine to rescue civilians from besieged areas.

Wednesday 4 May

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen updates the European Parliament on the Union 's sixth package of sanctions, detailing plans to phase out crude oil imports over six months and refined products by the end of 2022.

Thursday 5 May

The UK Government announces £45 million to help vulnerable groups within Ukraine and its borders.

There will also be an additional £20 million provided for humanitarian aid to Ukrainian refugees in Poland.
