War in Ukraine: What happened this week?

As Russia 's invasion of the Ukraine continued, there were a series of new developments this week.

This included new sanctions from the UK government against Russian generals and the Ukraine proposing a round of negotiations to evacuate its citizens from the under-fire city of Mariupol.

Saturday 16 April

Prime Minister Boris Johnson speaks with President Zelenskyy about the need for a long-term security solution for Ukraine and reaffirms that the UK would continue to provide the means for Ukraine to defend itself, including armoured vehicles in the coming days.

Sunday 17 April

The Ukrainian Government completes a European Union questionnaire required to begin a membership application.

Monday 18 April

The United Nations confirms 2,072 civilian deaths and 2,818 injuries in Ukraine since Russian invaded on 24 February.

Tuesday 19 April

The UK 's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York uses her speech to call for those responsible for the crimes in Ukraine to be prosecuted.

Wednesday 20 April

Ukraine proposes holding a 'special round ' of negotiations with Russia to help unblock Mariupol and evacuate its citizens.

Meanwhile, the All England Lawn Tennis Club announces a ban on Russian and Belarusian players from competing in this year 's Wimbledon tennis championships.

Thursday 21 April

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announces 26 new sanctions targeting both the Generals committing atrocities on the front line, as well as individuals and businesses supporting Putin 's military.

The UK Government concludes that Russian bombers have been intentionally targeting critical and civilian infrastructure in Mariupol.
