War in Ukraine: What happened this week?

The UK government intensified its sanctions against Russia this week as the conflict in Ukraine continued.

A fifth package of measures to cut off key sectors of the Russian economy and end the UK 's dependency on Russian energy were announced, among a number of other measures.

Friday 1 April

Prime Minister Boris Johnson releases a statement on Russia 's attacks against innocent civilians in Irpin and Bucha, noting that the UK will step up its sanctions, military support, and humanitarian support package to help those in need on the ground.

Monday 4 April

President Zelenskyy calls for an end to Russian “war crimes ”, as the ongoing retreat of Russian forces around Kyiv reveal alleged atrocities.

Tuesday 5 April

Prime Minister Boris Johnson delivers a message directly to the Russian people, encouraging them to access independent information via VPN connection and appealing to them to share the truth of Russia 's invasion.

President Zelenskyy addresses the UN Security Council after a distressing visit to Bucha.

Wednesday 6 April

The Foreign Secretary announces the UK 's fifth package of measures to cut off key sectors of the Russian economy and end the UK 's dependency on Russian energy.

Key sanctions announced include asset freezes against Russia 's largest bank, an outright ban on all new outward investment to Russia, a commitment to ending UK dependency on Russian coal and oil by the end of 2022 and action against key Russian strategic industries and state owned enterprises.

A further eight oligarchs are also sanctioned.

UK NHS trusts announces the donation of approximately 20 ambulances to the Government of Ukraine to help replace Ukrainian ambulances lost to Russian bombardments and provide urgent cared to the injured.

Thursday 7 April

At a meeting of G7 Foreign Ministers, the UK Foreign Secretary calls for further collective action against Russia, including an accelerated timetable for all G7 countries to end their dependency on Russian energy.
