War in Ukraine: What happened this week?

Russia 's invasion of Ukraine has passed the two-week mark - with Russian soldiers edging closer towards the capital Kyiv.

The conflict in Eastern Europe has promoted western countries, including the UK, to step up their sanctions against Russia.

Actions such as banning Russian oil imports have been announced.

Monday 7 March

The UK Government urges British nationals in Russia whose presence is 'not essential ' to consider leaving the country.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office continues to advice against all travel to the whole of Russia due to the lack of available flight options to return to the UK and the increased volatility in the Russian economy.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces the UK Government will provide Ukraine with £175 million worth of aid, saying it takes the UK 's total commitment to nearly £400 million.

Russia and Ukraine hold the third round of peace talks in Belarus. The talks focus on humanitarian corridors - to allow Ukrainian civilians to escape from military action - again after previous attempts to establish humanitarian corridors over the weekend collapsed when the ceasefire failed to hold.

Tuesday 8 March

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces the UK will ban Russian oil imports by the end of the year.

Wednesday 9 March

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace announces the UK is increasing its supply of weapons to Ukraine to defend itself, as well as a small consignment of Javelin anti-tank weapons. The UK has also provided small arms, body armour, helmets, ration packs and medical supplies to Ukraine.

Thursday 10 March

The Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers attend talks in Turkey. Little progress is made.

The UK Government announces sanctions for seven additional oligarchs, including Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

Home Secretary Priti Patel says that Ukrainian refugees who have passports or ID card will be able to apply for UK visas online from Tuesday.

This will only apply to people applying under the scheme where they can join family members already in the UK.

Ukraine opens seven 'humanitarian corridors ' to help civilians leave cities besieged by Russian forces, including the southern port of Mariupol.
